1. Andaman & Nicobar Islands is home to the only active volcano in the world.
Barren Volcano is the only active volcano in the continent of Asia. It is located on the Barren Island of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, India. The Barren Island is basically an uninhabited Island. The Barren Island is located at a distance of about 135 kilometres from Port Blair, the capital city of the Indian archipelago of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The first known eruption of the Barren Volcano was in 1787 and it was recently erupted in the year 2010 which lasted for a whole of six months time.
2. The largest species of Crab's is found in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
The Hermit Crabs (scientific name - Birgus Latro) are found in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. This is the largest species of crabs found in the world. These mostly live on land and feed on coconut kernels. And because of this vary fact, the Hermit Crabs are also referred to as the Coconut Crabs or as the Robber Crabs.
3. The Andaman & Nicobar Island is home to the largest species of Sea Turtles.
The Leatherback (scientific name - Dermocheleys Coriacea) is the largest species of Turtles in the world. The Leatherbacks lives in the shores of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. And surprisingly, you may be lucky enough to spot a Leatherback turtles on the beaches of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, India. And it is estimated that over a thousand Leatherback turtles lives in the Indian archipelago of Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
4. Commercial Fishing is restricted in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
There's is less fishes in the seas shores surrounding the Andaman & Nicobar Islands compared to other sea shores of the world. In order to conserve the different varieties of fishes, commercial fishing is banned in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India for over 4 decades now.
5. Baratang Volcano in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands is the only mud volcano in India.
The Baratang Volcano is located at Nilambur Village in Baratang Island. The first eruption of the mud volcano was recorded in 1983.
6. The Sentinelese, a tribe that lives on the Sentinel Island in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands are one of the most isolated paleolithic tribes in the world.
The Sentinelese actually live in the North Sentinel Island in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, India. In numbers, they are very few, roughly around 300 as estimated. They don't connect with the modern people's & attacks anybody that approaches their Island.
7. You might be surprised to know that Bengali is the most widely spoken language in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, India.
The Bengali Language is the dominant language spoken in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, India. It is due to the fact that most of the people's residing in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands are of Bengali origin who came here mostly from the Indian state of West Bengal. And there's a regular ferry and flight services operated in between Kolkata in West Bengal to Port Blair in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
8. The Ross Island, is one of the Islands that consists the Andaman & Islands was once served as an important base for the Japanese & the British Army.
Since the year 1858, the Ross Island served as the headquarter for the british. From this Ross Island, they used to rule most of the Islands of the current Andaman & Nicobar Islands. They used to rule from the Ross Island until the Japanese came here in 1941. It was the time of the Second World War, where Japan was a crucial player. The Japanese had set up their military base here in the Ross Island.
9. The Indira Point, India's Southernmost point was sunken 4.25 metres below the sea during the huge tsunami in 2004.
The Indira Point is the southernmost point/part of India and is located in the Great Nicobar Island of the Indian Union Territory of Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The Indira Point was formerly known as Pygmalion Point or Parsons Point. The Indira point earlier used to stand on land. And post the devastating tsunami of 2004, the surrounding land areas of the Indira point was submerged in the ocean water.
10. It's no surprise that the Andaman & Nicobar Islands is home to the first and the only joint tri-service defence command of India.
All the three Defense Forces of India has it's joint service command in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Because, it is a very strategic location for India for both military and trade. And numerous military exercises and drills are carried out often the state of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, India.
