Silchar is the capital of the district of Cachar and is the biggest commercial and the educational hub in the Barak Valley. During the British regime in India, back in the 19th Century, ships were used to dock at the bank of the Barak river. Back at that time, the bank of the Barak river was fully covered with stones to better support the ships to be docked.
